MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University cross country team has been ranked No. 6 in the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Associations (USTFCCA) Division I Women’s National Poll, released today.
“The ranking is a reflection of how we finished last season,” comments Head Coach Sean Cleary. “The true test will be in the coming weeks when we come out of the preseason and enter into the 2008 season.”
The Mountaineers received 291 votes in the poll. Oregon (358) took first place, followed by Florida State (340), Washington (328), Stanford (316) and Arizona State (306). WVU was ranked No. 2 in the Preseason Division I Women’s Cross Country Mid-Atlantic Region rankings, released yesterday by the USTFCCA. The Mountaineers are the highest ranked Mid-Atlantic region team, in front of No. 7 Princeton, who was ranked first in the regional ranking in the preseason poll.
The Mountaineers are off to a fast start this season, taking first place at the Preston Relays on Aug. 30, and finishing fourth at the Old Nassau Run, hosted by Princeton, on Sept. 13.
Next up, the team will race in the Paul Short Invitational held in Bethlehem, Pa., on Oct. 3. The race is set to begin at 2 p.m.
