MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University cross country team has been ranked No. 2 in the Preseason Division I Women’s Cross Country Mid-Atlantic Region rankings, released today by the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Associations.
“The second place ranking is a reflection of how we finished last season,” comments Head Coach Sean Cleary. “The true test will be in the coming weeks when we come out of the preseason and enter into the 2008 season.”
The Mountaineers rank second behind No. 1 Princeton and ahead of No. 3 Georgetown, No. 4 Penn State and No. 5 Villanova. The Mid-Atlantic Region is one of nine division nationwide, with 15 teams ranked in each region.
The Mountaineers are off to a fast start this season, taking first place at the Preston Relays on Aug. 30 and finishing fourth at the Old Nassau Run, hosted by Princeton University, on Sept. 13.
WVU closed out the 2007 season ranked No. 2 behind Princeton.
Next up, the team will race in the Paul Short Invitational held in Bethlehem, Pa., on Oct. 3. The race is set to begin at 2 p.m.
