Out of Sight, Out of Mind

Don’t be surprised if the longest streak in school history ends on Sunday. Mountaineer football has been in the polls for 45 consecutive weeks dating back to the 2005 season, 11 weeks longer than the previous best streak of 34 consecutive weeks spanning the 1988 and 1989 seasons.
West Virginia began this year ranked eighth in both the Associated Press and USA Today Coaches’ polls before dipping to 24th in the Coaches’ Poll and 25th in the AP Poll following its 24-3 loss at East Carolina last Saturday.
Although the Mountaineers don’t play this weekend they could very well fall out of the rankings on Sunday because it has happened already this year. UCLA jumped into the Top 25 after knocking off No. 18 Tennessee in its season opener before an off week pushed the Bruins out of both polls. This week UCLA is 26th, 13 points behind No. 25 West Virginia in the AP poll, and 27th in the Coaches’ Poll.
In the eyes of many voters out of sight is out of mind.
