On freshman free safety Robert Sands
He looks great in shorts, but he hasn’t hit anyone yet. He is athletic. Our job is to confuse the freshmen until they can’t see straight and have them figure it out by the time the first game comes. I think he’s bright, and he’s a good kid.
On the safeties so far
The bottom line is that we have to tackle people. If they all were playing flag football, they would all be All-American by now. Time will tell. It’s a day by day process, and they will get better everyday. We will make the starting decisions game week.
I’m going to take the whole first and second unit and flip them tomorrow. The truth of matter is nobody has the starting job yet. I’m not playing games with them or anything, but I want to give everyone an opportunity to see what they can do.
On the first two days of practice for the freshmen
We try to throw a lot of football at them, and we want to see what kind of football smarts they have and how well they retain it. That’s what we’re looking for. If they are quick learners, they have a better opportunity to play as freshmen.

On camp so far
They all look good in shorts, and we’ll see what happens when we put the pads on. As for the second day, I thought that we played with a better tempo, and they are all starting to understand what we want offensively.
On the freshmen
They try to take the first days to take everything in so when they put their pads on, they understand what we, as the coaches, are trying to do.
Ryan Clarke, a freshman, is also out there, and he is doing well. We have more bodies at that position but we won’t know until we put the pads on, who can make the plays.
