MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The No. 15 West Virginia University men’s soccer team will host the two-day West Virginia University Classic, presented by Jerseys Subs, on Friday, Aug. 29, and Sunday, Aug. 31, at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium. The Mountaineers will face Lafayette and Duquesne in the Classic.
WVU’s match on Friday against Lafayette will serve as the season-opener for both squads. Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m.
The match at 5 p.m. on Friday, preceding the Mountaineers’ contest, features Duquesne and Binghamton.
On Sunday, WVU squares off against Duquesne at 2 p.m. in a WVPBS-televised match. The Lafayette-Binghamton match on Sunday starts at 11 a.m.
WVU capped the 2007 campaign with a 14-6-2 overall mark, including a 7-3-1 BIG EAST record, earned a first-round bye in the NCAA Tournament for the second consecutive year and advanced to the NCAA Sweet 16 for the first time since 1981. The Mountaineers finished last year ranked 13th in the National Soccer Coaches Association poll.
Lafayette also finished 2007 strongly. The Leopards posted a 10-4-6 overall record and reached the Patriot League championship for the third straight season. Lafayette returns its biggest scoring threat in B.J. Glenn who totaled five goals a season ago.
Last season, Duquesne registered a 5-11-3 overall mark, but returns nine starters, including two of its top three goal-scorers in Alex Trujillo and Drew Jeffery, along with goalkeepers Chris Torres and Patrick Finnegan who combined to post a 1.07 goals against average.
The Mountaineers hold a 1-0 all-time advantage against the Leopards and are 4-1 all-time against the Dukes.
