Deep Thoughts

It's late at night, I can't get to sleep, and like Clark Griswold I start getting a little weird when I get tired.
I can think of three huge touchdown runs that came off the dreaded draw: Curlin Beck’s game-sealing TD at Oklahoma, A.B. Brown’s game-changing score at Pitt in 1988 and later that year Undra Johnson’s 55-yard touchdown to put a cap on a 41-point first half against Penn State.
If you can think of any memorable bubble screens please respond below because my short-term memory is failing me.
We could all hop in the time machine and travel back to 1967 to enjoy football games against Richmond, VMI, William & Mary and Davidson once again.
There are plenty of good schools within driving distance of West Virginia University to make an outstanding football schedule and I agree with the point Bill Stewart was making on Tuesday.
Have you looked at the non-conference schedule The Ohio State University is playing this year? The Buckeyes start off the season with a grueling opener against Youngstown State before taking on the Bobcats of Ohio University. After a trip to USC, the Buckeyes have another non-league game against Troy before the start of their Big Ten schedule.
In 2009, the Buckeyes face Navy, USC, Toledo and New Mexico State. In 2010 it’s Marshall, Miami (Fla.), Ohio and Eastern Michigan. Do you detect a pattern here?
That’s not exactly, USC, Oklahoma, Florida and Georgia.
At the same time, I can remember listening to a wise old ball coach once saying that all great football teams have one thing in common – great schedules. You can’t play the Dallas Cowboys every weekend.
Several more clicks of the remote eventually got me to ESPN Classic. Ever since Classic was purchased by The Family of Networks it has gone in the tank. Brian Bedol had the right idea when he started Classic Sports Network in 1995. Today thanks to The Family we get to watch shows like Arliss that we never watched in the first place.
I would even take The Battle of the Network Stars over Arliss or the 2002 Las Vegas Poker Championships.
Just for fun, try and pick the strongest network team of 1977:
ABC team: Gabe Kaplan (captain), LeVar Burton, Darleen Carr, Richard Hatch, Lawrence Hilton-Jacobs, Ron Howard, Hal Linden, Kristy McNichol, Penny Marshall, Jaclyn Smith
CBS team: Telly Savalas (captain), Sonny Bono, Kevin Dobson, Mike Farrell, David Groh, Linda Lavin, Lee Meriwether, Rob Reiner, Loretta Swit, Marcia Wallace
NBC team: Robert Conrad (captain), Elizabeth Allen, Lynda Day George, Carl Franklin, Karen Grassle, Dan Haggerty, Art Hindle, Kurt Russell, Jane Seymour, W. K. Stratton
At first glance you have to like Grizzly Adams, Col. Pappy Boyington (Conrad) and Kurt Russell over Kojak, Cat Woman, Mr. Kotter and Ritchie Cunningham. ABC is not too bad with Kaplan, Burton and a pretty good athlete in Ronnie Howard. To me, CBS is the weakest of the bunch with almost the entire MASH cast pulling them down. I seem to recall B.J. Hunnicut and Margaret Houlihan struggling a little bit on the obstacle course.
Of course this thing got so serious that by 1985 NBC was getting ringers like Bubba Smith to captain their team. I guess Smith’s Miller Light commercials did run on NBC.
Enjoy what is left of your day.
