The Patriots have tried to buy some insurance policies for their offensive line, but the cost is expensive. New England has signed five veteran offensive linemen. Two of them -- Barry Stokes and Anthony Clement -- ended up on injured reserve. Barring an injury settlement, those failed moves will cost the team $665,000 on injury splits. They signed veteran tackle Oliver Ross, but he's still on the physically unable to perform list. One of the other signees has retired, so the only veteran addition left is John Welbourn. Luckily the Patriots have one of the best offensive lines in the game.
Broncos backfield: Mike Shanahan can't get a break when it comes to his Broncos backfield. Filled with a healthy roster of undrafted running backs, Shanahan thought he found another sleeper in Anthony Alridge. Alridge hurt his hamstring on Friday. If he's out for a significant amount of time, the Broncos running game will be even thinner. Selwyn Young is destined to be the starter.
Major deal: The extension that turns Titans safety Cortland Finnegan's contract into a four-year deal worth close to $17 million might seem minor, but it's major. Finnegan is one of the best corners under the radar. He received Pro Bowl votes last season from AFC players and coaches. Finnegan is establishing himself as a No. 1 cornerback for the Titans, who have a chance to return to the playoffs. Still, you wonder how much better they would have been if Adam Jones would have played this past season. His suspension led the Titans to trade him to the Cowboys this offseason
Colts comeback: Peyton Manning is on schedule to return from having his bursa sac removed from his left knee July 14. Tight end Tom Santi is the barometer for Manning. Santi suffered a similar infection at the end of June when he was at the rookie symposium. Manning was about two weeks behind him with his surgery. Santi is expected to return to practice sometime next week. Manning might not be able to do anything in the preseason, but he should be ready for the regular season.
