MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Former West Virginia University pitcher Jeremy Cummings made his second appearance for Team USA Baseball in the 2008 Summer Olympic Games in Beijing, China.
The 31-year old right-hander tossed two shutout innings and allowed only one hit with one strikeout in Team USA’s 4-2 victory in 11 innings over Japan in the final game of the preliminary round. The United States moves on to face defending Olympic champion Cuba in the semifinals of the medal round on Friday, August 22, at 6 am ET.
Cummings entered the game in the fourth inning to relieve starter Trevor Cahill, a move that was made to save Cahill’s arm for the medal round. He has now allowed one run on three hits in five innings pitched in two relief appearances for Team USA.
The Charleston, W.Va., native is the all-time leader in career appearances at WVU with 58, and currently pitches for Triple-A Durham, an affiliate of the Tampa Bay Rays.
Team USA will look to avenge an earlier loss to Cuba, who won 5-4 in 11 innings against the United States on August 15. Cuba finished at 6-1 in the preliminary rounds while the United States went 5-2.
The winner of Friday’s game will play the winner of top-seeded South Korea (7-0) and Japan (4-3) in the Gold-Medal Game on Saturday, Aug. 23, at 6 am ET.
