MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia University women’s soccer players Greer Barnes and Amanda Cicchini have been named to the 2008 Missouri Athletic Club (M.A.C.) Hermann Trophy Watch List released by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) today.
The award is college soccer’s version of the Heisman Trophy and represents the highest level of individual achievement in the sport. Players are selected to the M.A.C. Hermann Trophy Watch List by a committee of Division I coaches who are NSCAA members.
Barnes and Cicchini are two of 47 players named to the preseason listing. North Carolina, Penn State and reigning NCAA champion USC have three players on the watch list, while West Virginia is one of 10 programs to have two players on the list.
The selection is the first for Barnes, a 2007 Second Team All-American by the NSCAA and Soccer Buzz. The Rye, N.Y., native started all 25 games at outside defender in 2007 as the Mountaineer defense tied a school record with 13 shutouts. Barnes became the first defender in school history to earn First Team All-BIG EAST honors that season.
For the second straight year, Cicchini is named to the watch list. A year ago, the Oakville, Ontario, native was a Soccer America First Team MVP and Second Team NSCAA All-American. The central midfielder is outstanding in controlling the tempo of play while working end line to end line. Cicchini is a three-time All-BIG EAST midfielder.
In November, the list will be narrowed to 15 semifinalists. Three finalists will be named in early December and will be invited to the M.A.C. on Jan. 9, 2009. The winner of the 2008 award will be announced during a nationally-televised news conference that evening.
