Morgantown, W.Va. – In its first of two preseason exhibition matches, the West Virginia University men’s soccer team hosts Virginia on Saturday, Aug 16. Kickoff at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
Admission to the match is free.
The Mountaineers and Cavaliers are familiar foes as the two squared off in the second round of the 2007 NCAA Tournament. Both teams went scoreless in the first half, but five minutes into the second, WVU’s Dan Stratford laced a free kick from beyond the 18-yard box past Virginia goalkeeper Dan Louisignau for the lone goal of the game. The win sent the Mountaineers to the NCAA Sweet 16 for the first time since 1981.
Both squads will see numerous new faces on the field in 2008. WVU’s roster features 16 new faces, consisting of 14 freshmen and two junior transfers. Virginia, who lost nine letterwinners, five of which were starters, is bringing in 12 newcomers.
West Virginia ended the 2007 campaign with a 14-6-2 overall mark, going 7-3-1 in BIG EAST play. Virginia finished 12-8-2 overall, 1-5-2 in the ACC.
