Kevin Schappell enters his third season as a graduate assistant with the Mountaineer men’s basketball team.
Schappell came to WVU in the summer of 2007 after completing his basketball career at Northern Kentucky University, where he earned honorable mention all-Great Lakes Valley conference honors as a junior.
As a senior, Schappell averaged 10.5 points per game and shot 86.9 percent from the free throw line (No. 3 in GLVC) as NKU posted a 24-9 record. He also connected on 52-of-116 attempts from 3-point range as a senior and helped the Norse advance to the championship game of the NCAA Division II Great Lakes Region tournament.
One of the hardest workers in Norse men’s basketball history, Schappell made a total of 106 3-point field goals during his career. He earned GLVC player of the week honors in Dec. 2005, after averaging 20 points per game and shooting 56.5 percent from the floor as the Norse swept GLVC rivals Rockhurst and Drury.
A 2002 graduate of Loveland (Ohio) High, Schappell earned Fort Ancient Valley conference player of the year honors three times and was named all-state in Ohio three times.
A native of Loveland, Ohio, Schappell earned his bachelor’s degree in 2007 from Northern Kentucky in secondary education. He is currently working toward a master’s degree in athletic coaching education at West Virginia.
