MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - West Virginia University Director of Athletics Ed Pastilong has announced the hiring of Matt Borman, John Matsko and Frank Oliverio to the development staff of the Mountaineer Athletic Club.
Borman joins the Mountaineer Athletic Club as director of major gifts and will focus on the areas of facility and program enhancement, along with major endowments. He comes to WVU from Old Dominion, where he has been the director of major gifts since June 2007. While at Old Dominion, Borman managed donor relationships for the Big Blue Club and helped raise more than $2 million annually through premium seat sales, annual contributions, endowments and naming rights opportunities. Borman was also an integral part in helping to raise more than $3.2 million for the complete renovation of ODU’s baseball complex.
Prior to Old Dominion, Borman turned in stints in athletic fundraising at the United States Military Academy (2005-07) and at James Madison (2003-05). While at West Point, he administered the Army “A” Club and increased donations by 52 percent to an all-time high of $2.78 million. At JMU, he increased the annual fund by 45 percent in 2005. He received his bachelor’s degree in business administration from Lynchburg College in 2001 and a master’s degree in sport management from West Virginia in 2003. He and his wife, Carter, will reside in Morgantown.
Matsko will serve as director of development for the MAC and will be responsible for the annual fund. He comes to WVU from UTEP, where he was the assistant director of development since June 2006. While at UTEP, Matsko assisted in all fundraising initiatives for the Miner Athletic Club, including campaigns, major gifts and the annual fund. He was part of a three-member staff that raised more than $2.2 million in unrestricted funds in 2007, and he coordinated all fundraising special events for the athletic department.
Prior to UTEP, Matsko worked at Kansas in several capacities from 2001-06. He was a facility planning assistant, compliance assistant and special assistant to the athletic director for the Jayhawks. The native of Durham, N.C., received his bachelor’s degree in finance from LSU in 2000, before earning a master’s degree in sports administration from Kansas in 2002. He is currently working on a doctorate degree in philosophy at Kansas. Matsko is single and will reside in Morgantown.
Oliverio is a Morgantown native and also will serve in the role of director of development for the MAC. He will focus on revenue generation, premium seating and special events. He joins WVU from the Morgantown law firm of Pullin, Fowler, Flanagan, Brown & Poe where he has practiced law in the area of massive toxic torts with an emphasis on asbestos since 2000. The firm is the national counsel for Lockheed Martin, and Oliverio helped establish the Morgantown branch to create a statewide presence for the firm.
From 1998-99, he was the executive director of Boomers USA, Inc., a Washington, D.C., lobbying organization designed to promote the concerns of the baby boom generation to Congress. Oliverio earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration from West Virginia in 1990, and a master’s degree from WVU in public administration in 1992. He later matriculated at Magdalen College at Oxford University in the areas of European community law before earning his law degree from Creighton in 1997. He and his wife, Amy, have a daughter, Julia, and reside in Morgantown.
“We are very appreciative of our athletic donors, and we want to continue to serve them as best we can,” Pastilong says. “These three gentlemen will enable us to continue and grow our fundraising efforts in the MAC.”
“As the athletic program has grown to new heights under Ed Pastilong’s direction, it is important that the Mountaineer Athletic Club grows to meet the needs of our donors,” says Niles Eggleston, assistant athletic director for development. “Not only can we better serve our athletic donors, but we can continue the work to enhance and build the overall athletic department.”
