MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University tennis team lost a close match to the University of Maryland Baltimore County, 4-3, on Monday night at the UMBC Tennis Complex in Baltimore, Md.
Running into a streaking UMBC squad that has now won nine consecutive matches, the Mountaineers (12-7, 2-1 BIG EAST) were unable to produce many positive results at singles competition. The Retrievers (9-3, 1-1 American East) won four of six singles matches.
The loss marks the third time WVU has suffered a 4-3 defeat this season, including the second time since last Thursday's 4-3 loss to Duquesne.
Monica Lyskawa notched her 10th victory in singles when she defeated Alice Chen at the No. 2 spot, 7-5, 6-2. She also paired with Stephanie LaFortune to get the win at No. 2 doubles, defeating Mannix-Mungo, 8-6.
LaFortune earned the other victory for WVU in singles play. The Longueuil, Quebec, native beat Joy Adewumi at No. 5 singles, 7-6 (10),3-6, 1-0 (6).
LaFortune’s two victories on the day extended her overall record to 21-11, giving her the first 20-win season of her collegiate career. She joins teammates Lyskawa (22), Natalia Prinz (21) and Stacey Percival (20) in eclipsing the 20-win plateau this season.
Percival notched her 20th victory when she teamed with Natalia Prinz to defeat Chen-Cette, 8-3, at No. 1 doubles. The senior also recorded her 99th career win and is now one victory shy from becoming the 20th Mountaineer to achieve 100 career victories.
WVU finished off the doubles sweep when Ashley Pilsbury and Monique Burton defeated Adewumi-Carapcea, 8-3, at No. 3 doubles. The No. 3 tandem improves to 9-5 and has provided a boost to the lineup throughout the season.
The Mountaineers return to BIG EAST play this weekend as they face a conference slate that includes three consecutive away matches. They start at Villanova on Friday, April 11, at 2 p.m., before facing Connecticut and Rutgers on Saturday and Sunday to round out the weekend.
