MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Freshman Megan Mischler netted two goals in leading the West Virginia women’s soccer team past James Madison, 4-1, Saturday afternoon in Harrisonburg, Va.
Mischler scored the game-winner in the 14th minute and scored the final goal of the match in the 89th minute. A Moon, Pa., native, Mischler beat a defender from 20 yards out to put WVU on top 2-0 at 13:51. Her second goal came at 88:08 on a breakaway with an assist from Morgan Betscher.
The Mountaineers opened the scoring in the game’s 12th minute on a goal from junior Deana Everrett. Mischler served a ball over the top to Everrett who dribbled past one defender and sent the ball past JMU’s goalkeeper.
“We came out in the first half and put pressure on them. We played a very strong first 45 minutes,” said Head Coach Nikki Izzo-Brown, whose team hit two crossbars and one post in the first half. “We did a good job of moving the ball around and I’m pleased with our effort today.”
West Virginia added to its 2-0 halftime lead with a goal at 55:07 from junior Greer Barnes. Barnes made a run forward and received a beautiful pass from Betscher at six yards out. The defender quickly settled the ball and sent it near post for a 3-0 lead.
The Dukes scored their lone goal of the 90-minute match in the 67th minute on a shot from 25 yards out.
The Mountaineers dominated possession and controlled the tempo throughout the match. JMU was whistled for three yellow cards and one red card.
West Virginia and JMU met in the 2007 NCAA tournament second round. Senior Ashley Banks and junior Everrett each scored second half goals to power fourth-seeded WVU to a 2-0 victory at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium.
WVU resumes spring competition with Purdue, the defending Big Ten champions, in the Betty Puskar Breast Care Center Soccer Invitational on April 13. Kick off is scheduled for noon at Dick Dlesk.
