Baseball: WVU Wins Suspended Game

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia used three runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to defeat South Florida 10-8 to complete Friday’s suspended game.
Yesterday’s game was suspended in the top of the eighth with West Virginia leading 7-6 and a USF runner on first base with no outs. Chris Enourato began the suspended game by getting Brandon Smith to line out to shortstop Tyler Kuhn and then Chris Rey to fly out to center.
After Ryan Lockwood stole second to get into scoring position, Enourato got Stephen Hunt out on strikes to end the eighth.
Kuhn began the bottom of the eighth with a home run to right, and the Mountaineers were able to plate two more. After back-to-back singles by Jedd Gyorko and Vince Belnome and a Joe Agreste sacrifice bunt, Gyorko scored on a passed ball with Belnome advancing to third.
Austin Markel flied out to centerfield to knock in Belnome to make the score 10-6, West Virginia.
In the top of the ninth South Florida (14-14, 4-6) made things interesting. A Cory Johnson single to center plated Mike Consolmagno, who reached on an infield hit. Trey Manz, who reached on a walk, scored on a wild pitch to make it 10-8. Eventually, Enourato was able to get Smith to line out to short to end the game amd pick up his fifth save of the season.
Kuhn, Gyorko and Agreste had three hits each for West Virginia, now 23-6, 5-2. The Mountaineers pounded out 15 hits while South Florida had eight.
Josh Whitlock overcame a five-run third to pick up his sixth win of the year. Whitlock (6-1) went seven innings, giving up six runs on six hits with eight strikeouts and four walks.
South Florida reliever Daniel Thomas took the loss. He pitched four innings, allowing four earned runs on nine hits with five strikeouts and a walk.
Addison Maruszak and Chris Rey had two hits each for the Bulls.
The second game is currently underway. The two teams will wrap up the three-game series on Sunday at 12:30 pm. The game was originally scheduled for a 1 pm start.
