Implemented in 1989 by WVU Director of Athletics Ed Pastilong, the Athletic Director’s Academic Honor Roll was created to recognize students who have achieved a GPA average of 3.0 or better. Since the program began in 1989, more than 3,000 student-athletes have earned a place on the honor roll.
“I am extremely proud of our student-athletes and our academic support staff here at West Virginia University,” says Garrett Ford, Associate Athletic Director for Student Services. “The number of honorees continues to grow as our student-athletes strive to be the best, both in the classroom and with their respective sports teams.”
Students from all 17 sports teams, in addition to cheerleading and athletic training, gathered at the Waterfront Hotel for dinner and acknowledgment of their academic achievements.
“The average GPA over the last few semesters for our student-athletes has been right around 3.0, meaning more student-athletes than not are making the honor roll,” says Paul Downey, Academic Advisor for Student-Athletes. “This is the one event throughout the year when we stop to recognize these student-athletes for their work in the classroom. Hopefully it inspires them further as we head into finals week soon here on campus.”
