Rifle: Hammond Competes in World Cup

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia rifle coach Jon Hammond recently represented Great Britain at the ISSF World Cup in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil, March 23-27. Hammond placed fifth in the six-series men's 50-meter prone with score of 698.5.
Hammond shot a 596 score in the qualification round, including two perfect 100s on the third and fifth series, to sit in a tie for third place heading into the finals. He then shot 102.5 in the event final to total the 698.5 score and a fifth-place finish.
Serbia’s Stevan Pletikosic added 104.9 in the final to his 598 qualification score to win the event with a 702.9 score. Torben Grimmel of Denmark was second at 701.4 and Warren Potent of Australia totaled a score of 699.5 for third. France’s Valerian Sauveplane edged Hammond for fourth (698.8).
In the four-series men's 50-meter three positions event, Hammond shot 393 in prone, 369 standing and 377 kneeling to total a score of 1139. His score placed 29th.
The WVU coach placed 32nd in the six-series men’s 10-meter air rifle with a score of 584, but shot a perfect 100 in the first of the six series. Hammond shot one of just 13 perfect series scores on the day in that event as 270 series were shot by 45 competitors.
It was the first of four World Cups for the Aberdeen, Scotland, native as he will next travel to Beijing, China, for training and competition. Hammond will also have other two World Cups in Munich, Germany, and Milan, Italy, in May before Great Britain’s Olympic team is selected.
Last summer, Hammond earned the first quota for Great Britain in rifle in the 2008 Olympic cycle with a fourth-place finish in the men’s 50-meter prone rifle.
