Tennis: WVU Keeps Season Alive Against Huskies

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - The West Virginia University tennis team defeated the University of Connecticut, 4-2, on Friday afternoon in the consolation round of the BIG EAST Championships at the USF Tennis Courts in Tampa, Fla.
WVU’s victory over No. 11 seeded Uconn, its second in the last week, kept its season alive in the double-elimination tournament. The No. 10 Mountaineers received two victories from seniors Stacey Percival and Natalia Prinz, as well as freshman Ashley Pilsbury.
The Mountaineers took the doubles point for the second straight match in the postseason tournament, winning at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles. Percival and Prinz defeated LoRusso-Herb, 8-3, while Pilsbury and sophomore Monique Burton won over Cheung-Moritz, 8-4, at No. 3 doubles.
Percival notched her first singles victory of the tournament when she beat Kelley LoRusso, 6-4, 7-5, at No. 1 singles.
Pilsbury followed with a victory at No. 6 singles, defeating Jennifer Moritz convincingly, 6-1, 6-1, to remain undefeated at 4-0 in the tournament.
The decisive match came at No. 3 singles, as Prinz won the match for WVU with a 6-2, 6-3, victory over BreAnn Cheung.
The Mountaineers will try to avenge an early-season loss to conference rival Pitt in their final match on Saturday, April 19, at 3 p.m. The No. 9 Panthers are coming off a 4-1 victory over No. 12 Georgetown in the consolation round.
