MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Forwards Megan Mischler and Deana Everrett scored in West Virginia’s 2-0 win over Canada’s U-17 National Team Tuesday afternoon at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium.
The Mountaineers took a 1-0 lead when Mischler found the back of the net in the 35th minute. The Moon, Pa., native received a perfect through ball up the middle from Everrett for the game’s first score.
“I was very impressed with the intensity and effort our ladies came out with today,” said Head Coach Nikki Izzo-Brown. “It was a good way to finish our final home spring game.”
Both teams had scoring opportunities fall short when shot attempts ricocheted off the crossbar, including a shot attempt from Everrett in the 59th minute.
West Virginia added to its lead at 67:30 when Everrett worked her magic around Canada goalkeeper Sarah Boucher. Everrett, a native of Oakville, Ontario, was left one-on-one and dribbled around Boucher to find an empty net on a breakaway.
After freshman Kerri Butler worked a scoreless first half in goal for WVU, sophomore Mallory Beck came up with three saves in the second half to complete the shutout. With 12 minutes remaining, Beck was also quick off her line to break up a charging Jenna Goobie of Canada.
“We played a very good and well organized team in Canada,” said Izzo-Brown. “It was a good experience for our ladies to play against quality teams like the Canadian U-17s.”
West Virginia out-shot Canada 11-4 and took six corner kicks to Canada’s one.
WVU (6-2) resumes its spring slate in Columbus, Ohio, against Ohio State on Sunday, April 20. Kick off at the Buckeyes’ practice field is scheduled for 1 p.m.
