Baseball: WVU Earns 7-4 Victory Over Seton Hall

MORGANTOWN, W.Va.– Sophomore Vince Belnome led the team with a game-high five RBIs, along with two hits, to lead West Virginia to a 7-4 victory over Seton Hall, today, in game three of the series at Owen T. Carroll Field in South Orange, N.J.
Senior Tyler Kuhn aided the Mountaineer offense with four hits and two runs, while Austin Markel and Justin Parks added two hits each. The win snapped SHU’s nine-game win streak.
WVU (26-9, 7-5 BIG EAST) closed the day with seven runs on 13 hits, while SHU (21-13, 10-5 BIG EAST) registered four runs on nine hits and committed one error.
Sophomore Billy Gross (5-1) earned the win allowing just four runs on nine hits, striking out one and walking two, in 6.2 innings of work. Sophomore Chris Enourato earned his sixth save of the season, as he kept the Pirates hitless, striking out four and allowing no walks in 2.1 innings.
Greg Miller (4-2) took the loss for SHU, allowing five runs on five hits, walking three and striking out five in 5.2 innings.
SHU’s Dan Lopez hit an RBI single through the left side to plate Matt Smedberg before Gusrang hit an RBI double to left field to score Tim McCann and take a 2-0 lead in the second inning.
WVU’s Belnome answered back with a bases-loaded, three-RBI double to center field to plate Jedd Gyorko, Kuhn and Tobias Streich, and take the lead by one. Streich was walked, Kuhn singled to center field and Gyorko reached on a single up the middle.
Lopez then walked in the fourth inning, advanced to third on Matt Skopak’s single through the right side and was driven in when Gusrang flew out to center field to knot the score at three.
The Mountaineers then had two consecutive one-run innings in the fifth and sixth. In the fifth, Streich walked, advanced to second on Parks’ sacrifice bunt, and moved to third on Kuhn’s single through the left side. Gyorko then grounded out to the shortstop to plate Streich.
In the sixth, Joe Agreste singled to left field and advanced to second on Markel’s sacrifice bunt. DiBartolomeo then hit an RBI single through the right side to dive in Agreste and take the lead, 5-3.
In the seventh inning, Parks singled through the left side before Kuhn hit an infield single to advance Parks and take first. Belnome then stepped up again and hit a two-RBI double down the left field line, plating Parks and Kuhn.
SHU would tag a run on in the bottom of the frame when Gusrang doubled down the left field line, and was driven in by Spagnuolo’s RBI double down the left field line to create the final margin, 7-4.
The Mountaineers will be back in action when they play host to Duquesne on Tuesday, April 15. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m., at Hawley Field.
