MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University women’s soccer team fell to Purdue, 1-0, Sunday afternoon in the Betty Puskar Breast Care Center Soccer Invitational at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium.
The Mountaineers controlled the tempo throughout the match and out-shot the Boilermakers 12-4, including 10-2 in the second half. The Boilermakers, however, capitalized on one of their two second half scoring chances.
With 4:33 to play, Purdue forward Loredana Riverso made a run up the right flank and found teammate Felicia Schroeder in front the of the net. Schroeder one-timed the ball into the back of the net from six yards out for the game-winner.
“We had our chances,” said Head Coach Nikki Izzo-Brown. “I thought we came out in the second half and did some things really well. We were able to make those halftime adjustments and put ourselves in positions to score. It’s a game of finishing your chances and we couldn’t find the back of the net.”
The Mountaineers were led offensively by forward Deana Everrett who took a game-high four shots. The All-America’s best scoring opportunity came in the 68th minute on a through ball from freshman Morgan Betscher. Purdue’s goalkeeper came up with a sliding save on Everrett’s far post shot.
WVU also had solid chances in the 67th and 88th minutes from freshmen Megan Mischler and Ashtin Larkin. Mischler’s left-footed attempt was punched over the top by Purdue’s goalkeeper and Larkin’s one-timer from 10 yards out was sent over the crossbar.
Another scoring opportunity came late in the first half off a cross from defender Greer Barnes to midfielder Carolyn Blank. Blank went up in the air and headed the ball just left of the far post.
West Virginia wore pink jerseys against Purdue to show its support in the fight against breast cancer. This fall the women’s soccer team will present Betty Puskar with a check for the money raised during the current spring season, adding to the $26,000 raised over the past four years.
“It’s very important for our girls to get involved in this cause,” said Izzo-Brown. “Obviously, it’s very real for all of the women here and just doing whatever we can to give back to the community is very important. We’ve been doing this tournament and fundraiser for a number of years and our girls have done a tremendous job of raising awareness and money for the Betty Puskar Breast Care Center.”
All of the money raised goes directly to the Betty Puskar Breast Cancer Fund at the Mary Babb Randolph Cancer Center. Funds are used to support diagnosis and treatment efforts and to provide opportunities to help patients and their families in the midst of battling breast cancer.
Next up for the Mountaineers is a game with Canada’s U-17 National Team on Tuesday, April 15, at Dick Dlesk at 3 p.m. WVU’s game with Team Canada is separate from the regularly scheduled five spring contests allotted by the NCAA.
