MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Seton Hall scored two runs in the second and fourth inning to take a 4-1 lead, en route to a 4-3 victory over West Virginia, today, to take the series at Owen T. Carroll field in South Orange, N.J.
Austin Markel led the Mountaineer offense with two hits and two RBIs, while junior transfer Joe Agreste added two hits, two runs, and one RBI.
WVU (25-9, 6-5 BIG EAST) had three runs on eight hits, while Seton Hall (21-12, 10-4 BIG EAST) registered four runs on seven hits.
Sophomore Steve Morrison (4-2) suffered his second loss of the season, allowing four runs on seven hits, striking out six and walking five in 7.1 innings. SHU’s Sean Black (2-2) earned the win, allowing just two runs on five hits, striking out four and walking two in 5.1 innings of work. Keith Cantwell held the Mountaineers hitless in two innings to earn his first save of the season, striking out five and walking one.
The Mountaineers got on the board first in the second inning when Agreste hit his fifth triple of the season to right field and scored when Markel hit an RBI single to right field.
SHU answered back with two runs in the bottom of the frame when Chris McCann hit an RBI double to center field to plate Matt Smedberg before Chris Fontenelli hit an RBI infield single to plate Dan Lopez.
The Pirates broadened the lead 4-1 in the fourth inning when Matt Skopak was hit by a pitch, advanced to second on Fontenelli’s single to center field, and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by A.J. Rusbarsky. Mark Pappas then grounded out to first base to plate Skopak before Fontenelli scored on a wild pitch by Morrison.
The Mountaineers battled back in the sixth when Jedd Gyorko doubled to left field, and was driven in by Agreste’s RBI single through the right side. Markel then hit his sixth triple of the season to plate Agreste and create the final margin, 4-3.
Game three of the series will be on Sunday, April 13, at Owen T. Carroll field. First pitch is set for noon.
