Track: Carrier Sixth in Heptathlon at Tennessee

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University track & field team will travel to the Sea Ray Relays in Knoxville, Tenn., held at the Tom Black Track at LaPorte Stadium this weekend.
True freshman Chelsea Carrier already completed the heptathlon that took place Wednesday and Thursday. The Buckhannon, W.Va., native scored 5,023 points for sixth place.
Carrier ran a 13.91 in the 100-meter hurdles to pick up 991 points. Carrier tied for sixth in the high jump, clearing 1.60 meters to add 736 points to her score. She added another 902 points after placing third in the 200-meter dash at 24.83.
She long jumped 5.61 meters for 732 points and ran a 2:28.20 in the 800m for 716 points, but threw just 10.30m in the shotput for 549 points and 25.78 meters in the javelin for 397 points.
A few more athletes will compete this weekend at Tennessee. After coming off a solid weekend at the Duke Invitational, Halimah Bashir will run the 400-meter hurdles. Karly Hamric will run the 800 meters and freshman Kaylyn Christopher will enter the 1,500 meters. Katelyn Williams will compete in the high jump.
Head Coach Sean Cleary is likely to enter a unit in the sprint medley relay with Carrier and Williams running the 200s, Bashir handling the 400 and either Hamric or Christopher running the 800.
The remainder of the team will travel to Robert Morris for the Bennie Benson Invitational Saturday, April 12, at the RMU Island Sports Center in Pittsburgh, Pa.
The field events get underway with the high jump at 9 a.m., while the running events start at Noon with 3,000-meter steeplechase.
