MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University tennis team split its doubleheader against Brown and Rhode Island on Sunday, March 9, in Providence, R.I.
The Mountaineers (6-4, 0-1 BIG EAST) were defeated in their morning match against Brown, 7-0. Their only victory came at No. 2 doubles by Monica Lyskawa and Stephanie LaFortune, who improve their record to 5-1 on the season after winning both doubles matches today.
WVU rebounded in its second match by defeating Rhode Island, 5-2. The Mountaineers took all four single matches in straight sets as well as all three doubles matches to down the Rams.
Senior Stacey Percival grabbed her third win of the season at No. 1 singles, while Natalia Prinz improved to 6-3 with a win at No. 3 singles. Ashley Pilsbury held her own at No. 4 singles by scoring her fourth win, and sophomore Monique Burton celebrated her first start this season with a victory at No. 6 singles.
WVU dominated in doubles play as Percival-Prinz downed their opponent, 8-3, at No. 1 doubles. Lyskawa-LaFortune won at No. 2 doubles, 8-1, and Burton-Pilsbury finished No. 3 doubles with an 8-0 sweep.
WVU Head Coach Marc Walters felt today’s grind of two matches was good for his team in what proved to be a long day.
“We want to play two matches and toughen up our team,” says Walters. “I think we accomplished that mission. We didn’t play inspired this morning against Brown, but we came out a lot better for our second match against Rhode Island.”
The Mountaineers resume action with a weekend slate of BIG EAST home matches against Seton Hall on Friday, March 14, at 5 p.m., followed by another home match against Cincinnati on Sunday, March 16, at 10 a.m. Both matches will take place at the Ridgeview Racquet Club.
