Gymnastics: Morris Leads WVU in Tri-Meet at GW

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The West Virginia University gymnastics team scored 194.550 points to top EAGL opponents George Washington and Maryland at the Charles E. Smith Center in Washington, D.C. No. 24 Kent State could not attend the meet to due to travel complications in Ohio.
The Mountaineers improved to 13-7, 7-0 in conference competition, while GW (192.650) moved to 11-8 with a second-place finish. Maryland (192.500) took third and fell to 5-11.
Junior Mehgan Morris got her spectacular afternoon started with a near perfect routine on the uneven bars. The Belle, W.Va., native got a 10.0 from one judge and a 9.9 from the other to garner a score of 9.95. Morris’ score ties the top mark in the EAGL this season and ties for the second highest in WVU history behind Umme Salim’s 10.00 against GW and Rutgers in 1998.
Morris finished second with 39.025 points in the all-around, while freshman Amy Bieski was the all-around champion with career-best 39.100 points. WVU’s Erica Watson also competed in the all-around and totaled 38.250 points.
WVU nailed the uneven bars in rotation one to score a season-high 49.125 points. Freshman Jessica Young notched a 9.725 in just her third routine of the year, while Bieski scored a 9.8 and Watson and Naja Johnson added 9.825s to tie for third. Morris anchored the lineup and provided a career-high 9.95.
On beam, WVU amassed 48.250 team points. Kiersten Spoerke had the team high with a 9.775, while freshman Bieski posted a season high of 9.675. Spoerke tied for third in the individual results.
On floor, West Virginia totaled 48.575 points as Bieski scored a 9.825 to win the event. Morris also scored a 9.775 to tie for second in the meet results.
The Mountaineers finished with 48.625 points on vault. Chelsi Tabor scored a 9.875 to become the vault champion. Bieski notched a 9.8 to tie for second and Jaime Gold had a 9.725.
West Virginia improved to 33-1 all-time against GW and 27-12-1 against Maryland.
