PITTSBURGH, Pa. – The West Virginia University wrestling team is tied for first place with 45 points heading into the second round of the EWL Tournament on Saturday, March 8, at Fitzgerald Field House in Pittsburgh, Pa.
The Mountaineers advanced eight to the second round. Two major decisions and a pin fall were the first round highlights as seven wrestlers saw action, with five advancing.
Senior Zac Fryling (157) leads WVU with a pin fall over Rob Michaels of Cleveland State in 2:20. After scoring an initial takedown early in the first period, Fryling turned his opponent over while staying inbounds to advance to the second round in a rematch against Matt Moley of Bloomsburg.
No. 1 seed Kurt Brenner (184) dominated his opponent for the second straight match, defeating CSU’s Derek Cummins in a 20-7 major decision.
Chance Litton (174) put on a good first showing as he earned a 15-7 decision over Clarion’s Mario Morelli. After winning 5-4 in his first match against Morelli, Litton came out aggressive and scored four takedowns in the first period while racking up 1:54 riding time. He will face Edinboro’s Phil Moricone in the next bout.
David Jauregui (149) won a close 5-4 decision over Joe Ciampoli of Pitt. Leading 4-3 through two periods, Jauregui scored an escape and held off his opponent in the final period to advance to the semifinals.
Kyle Turnbull (125) decisioned Jay Ivance of Clarion, 5-2, to continue play in the championship bracket. He will face top-seeded and No. 7 ranked Mike Sees of Bloomsburg in the second round.
Mountaineers Donnie Jones (165), Jared Villers (197) and Dustin Rogers (HWT) received first-round byes.
Second round action will begin at 12:15 p.m.
