Baseball: WVU To Play Host To Valparaiso

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - The West Virginia University baseball team will play host to Valparaiso in a four-game series at Hawley Field. Game one will be Friday, March 7, at 3 p.m. A doubleheader will be played on Saturday, March 8, at 1 p.m., followed by game four on Sunday, March 9, at 1 p.m.
This is the first meeting in program history between Valpo and WVU.
Valparaiso is 2-6 on the season, having lost its last five games. Senior right-handed pitcher, John Snelten (0-0, 18 ERA, 6 IP) will pitch the first game for the Crusaders, while right-handers Elliot Gibbs (0-1, 19.29 ERA, 2.1 IP) and Ranko Ivetic (0-0, 3.38 ERA, 5.1 IP) will share the duties on Saturday.
At the plate, senior Zach Rodeghero leads the Crusaders with a batting average of .485 in 33 at-bats, four doubles and one home run.
Freshman Jedd Gyorko is off to a fast start, hitting .500, is leading the Mountaineers with 18 hits in 36 at-bats. The starting second baseman has recorded three doubles and eight RBIs.
On the mound, the Mountaineers will most likely look to senior left-handed pitcher Matt Yurish (0-1, 12.38 ERA, 8 IP), junior right-hander Josh Whitlock (2-0, 2.03 ERA, 13.1 IP) and right-hander freshman Jarryd Summers (0-2, 6.75 ERA, 6.2 IP).
Last time out, the Mountaineers (6-3) defeated Duquesne, 8-1, in the Mountaineers’ home opener Wednesday afternoon at Hawley Field. Billy Gross pitched eight strong innings for WVU, retiring the last 10 batters he faced.
