Baseball: WVU Welcomes Maryland-Eastern Shore

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - The West Virginia University baseball team will play host to Maryland-Eastern Shore in doubleheader action on Tuesday, April 1. Game one will begin at 1 p.m. at Hawley Field.
Tuesday’s game will mark the eighth meeting in program history between UMES (5-24, 4-2 MEAC) and WVU (20-6, 4-2 BIG EAST) in series play, which began in 2005. The Mountaineers are undefeated in the all-time series, having won all seven contests.
On the mound, the Mountaineers will most likely look to freshman right-hander Jarryd Summers (2-2, 3.74 ERA, 27K, 11BB) and junior left-hander Bobby Thompson (0-0, 8.00 ERA, 4K, 9BB) as starters.
UMES went 1-2 in its last series against Delaware State. The Hawks dropped their first game, 12-7, and won the second, 2-1, before falling in the third game, 14-2.
The Hawks will most likely look to Elliot Arrington (1-2, 4.02 ERA, 23K, 15 BB) on the mound while Pat Hercinger leads the team at the plate with 24 RBIs on 29 hits and 16 runs. The junior infielder also has four doubles and one triple on the season.
Last week, sophomore Vince Belnome led the Mountaineer attack with 12 RBIs. The third baseman registered 10 hits, including two doubles and two triples. Junior Justin Parks recorded 10 RBIs on 17 hits, while junior transfer Joe Agreste also had 10 RBIs on 12 hits, including two home runs. Freshman Jedd Gyorko also hit two home runs on the week.
WVU went 4-2 last week, defeating Coppin State 26-3 on Monday, March 24, and Morehead State 10-5, 16-6 in doubleheader play on Tuesday, March 25. The Mountaineers dropped its first two at Rutgers 8-4, 8-2 but defeated the Scarlet Knights 8-7 in ten innings in game-three this past weekend.
Head Coach Greg Van Zant is just two victories away from his 400th career win.
