MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Four West Virginia University gymnasts were named first team all-EAGL at the annual East Atlantic Gymnastics League (EAGL) Championships banquet Friday night at the Lakeview Resort.
Junior Mehgan Morris, a two-time EAGL Gymnast of the Week, led the way making first team on bars, beam, floor and in the all-around. Morris competed in all 12 meets this season, 10 as an all-arounder. The Belle, W.Va., native ranked No. 1 in the conference this season on bars with a 9.89 regional qualifying score (RQS) and also ranked second in the all-around in the region at 39.09.
Morris set career highs on vault (9.75), beam (9.825) and in the all-around (39.200) in ’08. She also posted a career-high 9.95 on the uneven bars at George Washington on March 9, tying for the second best bars score in school history.
Sophomore vault specialist Chelsi Tabor made the all-EAGL first team on vault, as her RQS was second in the league at 9.811. Junior Erica Watson was named to the first team on bars with her 9.731 RQS.
Freshman Amy Bieski had a phenomenal rookie year and was named to the first team on the floor and in the all-around. Bieski also was named to the second team on vault and bars. Senior vaulter Jaime Gold was tabbed to the second team.
Sophomore Kiersten Spoerke, WVU’s most consistent gymnast on the beam in 2008, was named to the second team on beam, while fellow sophomore Shelly Purkat made the all-EAGL floor second team.
North Carolina sophomore Christine Nguyen was named the Gymnast of the Year award. NC State gymnasts Leigha Hancock won the Outstanding Senior award and Brittney Hardiman picked up the EAGL Rookie of the Year award for the Wolfpack. Maryland senior Gretchen Kittelberger earned the Scholar-Athlete of the Year award.
A total of 42 gymnasts earned first team all-EAGL honors in 2008. Gymnasts with a top-eight RQS within the EAGL (no tie breakers) on each event and in the all-around qualified for the all-EAGL first teams.
