Sardinia, Italy – The West Virginia University’s women’s soccer team posted a 6-1 win over Villaputzu Friday night in Sardinia, Italy, to finish its spring break tour unbeaten (4-0).
”It was a great finish to a tremendous soccer experience,” said Head Coach Nikki Izzo-Brown. “One of our goals was to learn more about our team and we accomplished just that. It has been a unique and rewarding trip.”
The Mountaineers scored five second half goals and the defense allowed only two shots on the night. Sophomore Carolyn Blank broke a 1-1 tie in the game’s 61st minute by dribbling through the Villaputzu defense and sending the ball inside the far post.
Three minutes later junior Deana Everrett’s header off a Lisa DuCote corner kick and Greer Barnes flick put West Virginia up 3-1.
The scoring continued in the 67th minute on a goal from freshman Megan Mischler. Mischler intercepted a goal kick and dribbled forward to beat the Villaputzu on the ground for a 4-1 advantage.
Freshman Cassandra Deitrick added to the mix at 70:21 on a thru ball from Blank.
Freshman Morgan Betscher concluded the scoring in the 75th minute on a one-timer, near post on a through ball from DuCote.
Villaputzu scored its lone goal at 4:39 on a breakaway.
Everrett also scored WVU’s first goal at 31:24 on a pass from Sydney Metheny.
WVU finishes its spring break tour of Czech Republic and Italy with a 4-0 record. The team is scheduled to return to the United States on Sunday, March 30.
