PRAGUE – The West Virginia University women’s soccer team downed Slavia, 2-0, Tuesday night in Prague, Czech Republic.
“It was another cold night and we adjusted well to their style of play early on,” said Head Coach Nikki Izzo-Brown. “We got after them from the opening whistle and it was a total team effort. We had two physical games against good competition in Prague.”
West Virginia dominated possession early and often. The Mountaineers scored the game’s first goal in the 24th minute on a goal from junior forward Deana Everrett. Sophomore midfielder Carolyn Blank sent a ball up the middle to Everrett who split two defenders and sent a ball inside the far post for the 1-0 lead.
Freshman goalkeeper Kerri Butler came up with a big save less than five minutes remaining in the first half. Butler got her hand on a shot from 25 yards out, tipping the ball over the crossbar to preserve the first half shutout.
West Virginia nearly added to its lead at 62:25 when junior midfielder Michelle Molinari hit the left post, sending the ball back across the goal line to be cleared by a Slavia defender.
Everrett connected on her second goal of the match at 67:41 to make the score 2-0. Junior defender Kelsey Fowler placed a beautiful ball over the top to a streaking Everrett who beat Slavia’s goalkeeper far post.
Sophomore Mallory Beck worked a scoreless second half to combine with Butler for the shutout.
West Virginia will play its third game in as many days on Wednesday, March 26 against Roma Calcio Femminile in Rome. The final game will be held on March 28 versus Villaputzu in Cagliari.
