MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University tennis team travels to Wilson, N.C., to play back-to-back matches against Division II opponents Barton and Mount Olive on Wednesday, March 26.
WVU plays Barton first at 3 p.m., followed by a match against Mount Olive at 6:30 p.m.
The Mountaineers (9-4, 2-1 BIG EAST) are coming off a 6-1 drubbing against California (Pa.), a high-powered Division II squad ranked No. 5 nationally.
Stephanie LaFortune has paced WVU with a 5-1 mark in singles and doubles competition during her last six matches. Her play at No. 6 singles as well as teaming with Monica Lyskawa at No. 2 doubles has led the Mountaineers in their four-match winning streak.
Senior Natalia Prinz is enjoying her best season as she is coming off a two-win effort against California. She is also 5-1 since WVU’s critical conference win against Seton Hall, and has provided a spark to the singles lineup at the No. 3 spot.
Winning the doubles point in its last four matches has been key for WVU. The Mountaineers have also won 17 singles matches in their last four outings, showing consistency in both phases of the match.
WVU Head Coach Marc Walters looks forward to playing outdoors and has plans to utilize WVU’s depth in both matches.
“This trip will help us break the outdoors and get some of our girls acclimated with playing outside,” says Walters. “Both teams are capable teams, and it should help us play some more girls and give them an opportunity to play competitive matches.”
