Baseball: WVU Plays Midweek Home Games

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - The West Virginia University baseball team will play host to Coppin State on Monday, March 24, before hosting Morehead State in doubleheader action on Tuesday, March 25. The match-up against Coppin State is slated for 2 p.m., while the WVU-Morehead State game is set for 1 p.m. Both games will be played at Hawley Field.
This will be the 12th meeting in program history between Coppin State and WVU in series play, which began in 1997. The Mountaineers lead the all-time series, 11-1, while Tuesday’s contest will be the seventh meeting between WVU and Morehead State. The Mountaineers lead the series which began in 1976, 4-3.
Freshman Jedd Gyorko continues to lead the Mountaineer attack, hitting .488 with six doubles, three triples and two home runs. The starting second baseman has recorded 21 runs and 24 RBIs.
On the mound, the Mountaineers will most likely look to junior right-hander Ross Fetterly (1-1, 4.66 ERA, 7 K, 3 BB) and Jarryd Summers (1-2, 3.45 ERA, 21K, 9BB) as starters.
Coppin State is 2-21 on the season and is led by Harry Williams at the plate. The sophomore has recorded eight doubles and two home runs. The outfielder has 30 hits on 18 runs and 13 RBIs.
Morehead State is currently 6-12 on the season and has lost nine straight games. The Eagles are led by senior Andrew Wertz who has three doubles and four home runs on the season. He has also recorded 18 hits on seven runs and 10 RBIs.
Last time out, the Mountaineers (16-4, 3-0 BIG EAST) swept BIG EAST rival Pitt in a three-game series. Sophomore Vince Belnome led the Mountaineers with a home run, eight runs scored, nine hits and five RBIs. Belnome had a .643 batting average and recorded a .800 fielding percentage.
