Baseball: Sweeps Pitt With Game Three Win

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - West Virginia sophomore Steve Morrison pitched a complete game and freshman Tobias Streich finished with two hits and drove in three run to lead the Mountaineers to a 8-1 victory over BIG EAST-rival Pitt, today, at Hawley Field for the three-game conference sweep.
“This is a tremendous win for us,” comments head coach Greg Van Zant. “Morrison pitched a great game for us and sweeping Pitt is a great way to start our BIG EAST slate.”
Vince Belnome finished with two hits, two runs and two RBIs, and junior Jordon Yost recorded a season-tying best 12 putouts, and finished with one hit and one RBI.
Morrison (4-0) pitched his first complete game of the season. Pitt’s left-hander, senior Brian Chrisman (3-2) dropped his second decision, allowing eight runs on eight hits, walking none and striking out two in two inning of work.
The Mountaineers (16-4, 3-0) finished with eight runs on eight hits, while Pitt (6-11, 0-3 BIG EAST) finished with one run on three hits and committed two errors.
WVU took a 4-0 lead in the first inning. Belnome hit an RBI single to right center field to plate Kuhn, Austin Markel then hit a triple to center field to plate both Streich and Belnome. Yost then hit a homer over left field to plate Markel.
The Mountaineers added four more in the second inning when Belnome’s RBI double to left field drove in Enourato. Streich then hit his second home run of the season, a three-RBI, over left field to plate Belnome and Gyorko.
After a scoreless third, Pitt’s Danny Lopez hit a home run to center field to put the Panthers on the board 8-1.
Lopez led the Panthers with one run on two hits and one RBI.
The Mountaineers play host to Coppin State on Monday, March 24. First pitch is at 2 p.m. at Hawley Field.
