GAME NOTES
SYRACUSE, N.Y. - With a third place finish in the BIG EAST regular season already wrapped up and, more importantly, a first round bye in the conference tournament this weekend as the No. 3 seed, the West Virginia University women's basketball team closes regular season play at Syracuse, Monday, March 3, at 7 p.m. at the Carrier Dome.
No. 13/13 West Virginia (23-5, 12-3) leads the all-time series with Syracuse (21-7, 9-6) by a 10-7 count. The Mountaineers have won six straight against the Orange dating back to 2003.
West Virginia Head Coach Mike Carey is 6-2 all-time against the Orange. The Mountaineers are also 5-2 all-time against the Orange in Syracuse and 1-0 in the Carrier Dome.
The Mountaineers enter the Syracuse contest on an offensive tear, scoring at least 75 points in each of its last five contests. WVU has also hit 51 3-pointers during that span and is shooting 48.8% from 3-point range in its last four games.
Four Mountaineers are averaging double-figures in scoring: senior center Olayinka Sanni (16.8), senior guard Meg Bulger (13.6), senior guard LaQuita Owens (13.4) and senior forward Chakhia Cole (10.3).
Syracuse has been the surprise story of the league this season as it was picked 13 in the preseason BIG EAST Coaches' Poll and is currently in fifth place entering its contest with WVU. This year has been the most successful regular season for the Orange since 1987-88.
Like WVU, four Orange players are averaging double-figures in scoring led by Chandrea Jones' 15.1 per game.
