Baseball: WVU To Open BIG EAST Slate Against Pitt

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - The West Virginia University baseball team opens its BIG EAST Conference slate against arch-rival Pitt for a three-game series at Hawley Field this weekend. Game one will be played on Thursday, March 20, at 5 p.m., followed by game two on Friday, March 21, at 3 p.m. The final game of the series will be played on Saturday, March 22, at 1 p.m.
This will be the 168th meeting in program history between Pitt and WVU, which began in 1895. The Mountaineers lead the all-time series, 91-76.
Pitt is 6-7 on the season, having won its last three games. Pitt is lead by senior lefty, Brian Chrisman on the mound (3-1, 2.45 ERA, 30 K, 3 BB). At the plate, senior Sean Conley leads the Panthers with a batting average of .404, including 21 hits, four doubles, five home runs and 24 RBIs.
Freshman Jedd Gyorko continues to lead the Mountaineer attack, hitting .493 with six doubles, three triples and one home run. The starting second baseman has recorded 16 runs and 19 RBIs.
On the mound, the Mountaineers will most likely look to junior right-handers Josh Whitlock (4-0, 2.30 ERA, 22 K, 10 BB) and Ross Fetterly (1-1, 4.66 ERA, 7 K, 3 BB) as starters.
Last time out, the Mountaineers (13-4) swept Iona in a four-game series at Hawley Field this past weekend. Senior Tyler Kuhn led WVU with two doubles, one triple, three home runs, and eight runs in the series.
For his efforts, Kuhn was named the BIG EAST Player of the Week, the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association National Hitter of the Week, as well as a member of the College Baseball Foundation’s National All-Star Lineup.
