Women's Basketball: WVU No. 5 Seed in NCAA Tourney

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia University’s women’s basketball team has earned a No. 5 seed in the NCAA tournament’s Spokane regional and will face No. 12 New Mexico, at The Pit, in Albuquerque, N.M., Saturday, March 22, at 8:30 p.m. (EST). The game will be broadcast via ESPN2 with Bob Wischusen and Jimmy Dykes on the call.
The winner of that contest will take on the winner of No. 4 Vanderbilt and No. 13 Montana which will occur approximately 30 minutes after the conclusion of WVU’s contest with UNM.
No. 17/18 West Virginia (24-7) is making consecutive NCAA tournament appearances for the first time in school history. The at-large bid is the fifth for the Mountaineers in school history and third under Coach Mike Carey. WVU is 3-4 all-time in the NCAA tournament.
New Mexico (20-12) won the Mountain West Conference’s automatic bid after defeating San Diego State, 62-59, on March 15. They are making their seventh consecutive NCAA tournament appearance and have won six straight games entering the WVU contest.
WVU leads the all-time series with the Lobos by a 1-0 count. The Mountaineers and Lobos last played in 1982 in Morgantown, a 71-56 WVU victory.
