Rifle: WVU Sixth at NCAA Championships

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University rifle team finished in sixth place with an aggregate score of 4616 in the 2008 NCAA Rifle Championship, today, at West Point Military Academy in West Point, N.Y.
Alaska-Fairbanks won its third-consecutive national title with a score of 4662 followed by Army (4652), Texas Christian (4627) and Nebraska (4625). Kentucky (4623) finished fifth overall followed by WVU (4616), Navy (4610) and Nevada-Reno (4591).
“We would have had to like to do a little better,” comments Head Coach Jon Hammond. “We had a disappointing day but it gave us great experience. Competing in the NCAAs put us in a great position for next year.”
The Mountaineers recorded a score of 2311 in the air rifle event, held today. Freshman Brandi Eskew, who shot a 585, led the Mountaineers and was followed by Tommy Santelli who recorded a score of 577. Senior Lafe Kunkel scored 575 before freshman Andy Lamson totaled 574.
Alaska-Fairbanks took the air rifle event with a score of 2350, followed by Navy (2342), Army and Nevada-Reno who tied with a score of 2334. Kentucky finished fifth in the event totaling 2324 followed by Nebraska (2317), Texas Christian (2315) and WVU (2311).
The Mountaineers’ score of 2305 in the smallbore event, held yesterday, was combined with the air rifle score of 2311 to total the team’s aggregate score of 4616.
WVU holds the most NCAA Rifle Championships since 1980 with 13. This was the first trip to the NCAA for the Mountaineers since 2002 and the first under Hammond.
