Baseball: WVU To Play Host To Iona

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - The West Virginia University baseball team will play host to Iona in a four-game series at Hawley Field. Game one will be Friday, March 14, at 3 p.m. A doubleheader will be played on Saturday, March 15, at 1 p.m., followed by game four on Sunday, March 16, at 1 p.m.
This is the first meeting in program history between Iona and WVU.
Iona is 0-8 on the season, having lost its last two-game series against Navy. The Gaels are lead by Shave Sveda on the mound (0-2, 7.11 ERA, 8 K, 7 BB). At the plate, Joe Lorenzo leads the Gaels with a batting average of .346, including nine hits, three doubles, two triples and one home run.
Freshman Jedd Gyorko continues to spear-head the Mountaineer attack, hitting .527, 29 hits, six doubles, three doubles and one home run. The starting second baseman has recorded 11 runs and 15 RBIs.
On the mound, the Mountaineers will most likely look to junior right-hander Josh Whitlock (3-0, 2.21 ERA, 15 K, 8 BB) and sophomore righty Billy Gross (1-0, 0.69 ERA, 11 K, 4 BB) early in the series as starters.
Last time out, the Mountaineers (9-4) defeated St. Bonaventure, 21-3, on March 12, at Hawley Field. Senior Tyler Kuhn finished with three hits, blasted a career-high two home runs and drove in a career-high seven runs, and freshman Jedd Gyorko tied a school record with five hits and finished with three RBIs.
