Tennis: WVU Rebounds Against Columbia

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - The West Virginia University tennis team defeated Columbia, 7-0, on Saturday, March 1, at the Penn State Indoor Tennis Center in University Park, Pa.
The short-handed Lions (2-4) competed with only four players and did not participate in two singles matches as well as one doubles contest.
The Mountaineers (5-3, 0-1 BIG EAST) won all six matches played, including three tiebreakers in singles competition. One day after being shut out against Penn State, WVU recorded its first shutout over an opponent since defeating BIG EAST foe Georgetown, 7-0, on April 10, 2007.
Stacey Percival defeated Stephanie Zilberman, 6-4, 5-7 (10-8), in No. 1 singles. She also paired with fellow senior Natalia Prinz to win against Carling Donovan and Natalia Christenson in No. 1 doubles, 8-6.
Prinz emerged victorious in No. 3 doubles, defeating Christenson in another close match, 6-4, 6-7 (10-6). She improves to 5-3 in singles play and recorded her fourth two-win day of the season after scoring a victory in doubles as well.
Monica Lyskawa rebounded with a victory against Donovan, 4-6, 6-3 (10-1), in No. 2 singles. She also recorded another win after teaming with Stephanie LaFortune to defeat Zilberman and Kim McMenamin in No. 2 doubles, 8-5.
Colleen Speaker had the clinching victory at No. 4 singles as she defeated McMenamin, 6-2, 6-1, to garner her fifth win in singles play this season.
WVU returns to action next weekend as it travels to Rhode Island to face Brown on Sunday, March 9, at 10 a.m., followed by a match against Providence at 4 p.m. Both matches will take place at Brown University.
