Gymnastics: WVU Faces #7 LSU and #15 Auburn

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University gymnastics team travel to Baton Rouge, La., Friday, Feb. 8, to face No. 7 LSU and No. 15 Auburn at the Pete Maravich Assembly Center at 7 p.m. CT.
The Mountaineers (5-5, 2-0 EAGL) enters the meet averaging 192.665 points per competition upsetting No. 14 Penn State on the road last week, 195.150-193.375. It was the first time WVU topped Penn State in six meetings. For the third week in a row, Shelly Purkat picked up EAGL Specialist of the Week honors after receiving a pair of 9.825s on beam and floor at PSU.
Junior Mehgan Morris scored 39.075 points as an all-arounder at Penn State, her first career score above 39.0 points, and currently ranks third in the EAGL with a 38.750 average. Morris also ranks first in the league on floor with a 9.82 average and third on bars with a 9.78 average.
LSU has a team average of 195.635 and most recently defeated Kentucky, 195.075-191.200, on Feb. 1, in Baton Rouge.
Auburn won its last meet, a quad-meet with N.C. State, George Washington and Texas Woman’s with a season-high team score of 195.925.
The Mountaineers have never defeated LSU in five previous meetings but are 3-5 against Auburn in eight competitions. The teams most recently met at the 2007 NCAA Southeast Regional in Morgantown where LSU placed second (195.950 points) out of six teams, WVU was third (194.775) and Auburn was fourth (193.950). By finishing in the top two spots, Louisiana State advanced to nationals.
