MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - West Virginia University Head Coach Jon Hammond was named the Great American Rife Conference (GARC) Coach of the Year on Sunday, Feb. 24, at the conclusion of the GARC Championship, where the Mountaineers finished third out of eight teams.
“It’s neat to be recognized by your peers,” comments Hammond. “I wasn’t expecting it. It was a great end to a really great day.”
Hammond was voted Coach of the Year by the leagues eight head coaches.
Hammond took over the rifle program last season and guided the team to its first winning season (6-4) since 2003, and a fourth-place finish at the 2007 GARC Championship.
The 2008 squad currently holds a record of 8-3 and took third place with a team aggregate score of 4626 at the 2008 GARC Championship this weekend at the Patricia C. Lamar National Guard Readiness Center in Oxford, Miss.
After the Mountaineers shot a 2290 in smallbore on Saturday, WVU followed that up with a meet-high 2336 in air rifle Sunday.
West Virginia will now wait to find out if it qualifies for the NCAA Championships on March 15-16, later this week.
