PISCATAWAY, N.J. – The West Virginia University gymnastics team scored 193.925 points to win a five-team meet at Rutgers Saturday night at the Livingston Recreation Center in Piscataway, N.J.
Host Rutgers tied for second with URI with 189.900 points, followed by Bridgeport (187.625) and Ursinus (185.250).
The Mountaineers (10-7, 4-0 EAGL) picked up a conference win over league member Rutgers and improved to a combined 71-0 against tonight’s opposition.
Sophomore Chelsi Tabor anchored the vault lineup and scored a team-high 9.775 to highlight WVU’s 48.25 points on vault. Tabor’s vault placed second in the meet. Erica Watson added a 9.725 and Jaime Gold notched a 9.65.
Mehgan Morris tied a career high with a 9.925 on the uneven bars to lead WVU in rotation two. The Mountaineers as a team scored 48.825 points for the second consecutive week. Naja Johnson (9.775) and Watson (9.75) preceded Morris with solid scores.
Morris again paced West Virginia, this time on the balance beam as she notched a team-high 9.825. Shelly Purkat and Kiersten Spoerke each added 9.7s as WVU totaled 48.075 points on the event.
On floor, WVU wrapped up the win with 48.775 points. Spoerke was the floor exercise champion with a 9.825, while Amy Bieski, Morris and Watson each tallied a 9.8 to tie for second place.
Morris won the bars, beam and the all-around with 39.100 points, while teammate Watson totaled 38.825 in the all-around for second place.
The Mountaineers return to action in the gymnastics version of the "Backyard Brawl" on March 1, at Fitzgerald Field House in Pittsburgh. Meet time is set for 7 p.m.
