MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University tennis team looks to continue its solid start in the BIG EAST opener at rival Pitt on Sunday, Feb. 24, at 5 p.m.
The Mountaineers (4-1) are off to their best start since the 2003-04 season and ride a three-match winning streak coming into the contest.
WVU defeated Mid-American Conference foe Akron in its last outing, 5-2, as seniors Stacey Percival and Natalia Prinz earned two victories apiece to pace the Mountaineers.
Junior Colleen Speaker has been stellar at No. 4 singles with a 4-1 record. She holds a three-match winning streak and defeated Akron’s Lindsey Berry in her last match, 6-2, 6-4.
WVU has enjoyed success in singles competition through its first five matches, and has won its last 13 of 18 singles matches.
The Panthers (1-3) have stumbled since their opening match win against conference opponent Georgetown, having lost three straight matches. They are coming off a 4-3 loss to Cincinnati last weekend.
The Mountaineers defeated Pitt in last season’s meet, 4-3, and have not lost to the Panthers since the 1975-76 season. WVU owns a 27-1 all-time record against their BIG EAST rival.
