Rifle Set For GARC Championships

MORGANTOWN, W.Va- The West Virginia rifle team is set to travel to Oxford, Miss. to compete in the Great American Rifle Conference (GARC) championships from Saturday, Feb. 23, to Sunday, Feb. 24. The event will be hosted by Ole Miss at the Patricia C. Lamar National Guard Readiness Center. The Mountaineers enter the championship with an 8-3 record and are on a four-match win streak.
The competition is slated to begin at 6:30 a.m. on Saturday with both rifle and smallbore events. The smallbore finals will start at 5 p.m. while the air rifle finals will begin at noon on Sunday.
“The team will be taking a lot of confidence into this match,” comments Head Coach Jon Hammond. “We know our opponents and have shot against them all before. We have to shoot our best match.”
Each member of the conference will compete in the championship which includes Army, Kentucky, Memphis, Nebraska, NC State, Ole Miss, and Xavier. The Mountaineers defeated NC State (4,618-4,506) on Oct. 6, Ole Miss (4,614-4,551) on Oct. 26, Nebraska (4,615-4,599) on Jan. 12, and Memphis (4,609-4,470) on Jan. 26, all in regular season action. WVU fell to conference foes Army (4,600-4,675) on Oct. 28, and Kentucky (4,616-4,647) on Nov. 12, while Xavier is the only GARC opponent the Mountaineers have not yet faced this season.
Last season, the Mountaineers finished fifth at the championship.
