Baseball: WVU to Play Akron in Four-Game Series

GAME NOTES
MORGANTOWN, W.Va.- The 2008 West Virginia baseball season is set to begin on Friday, Feb. 22, when the squad travels to Winston-Salem, N.C., to face Akron in a four-game series at Ernie Shore Stadium.
Game one will be at 3 p.m. on Friday followed by a doubleheader starting at noon on Saturday, Feb. 23. The final game of the series will begin at noon on Sunday, Feb. 24.
The Mountaineers and Zips last faced each other on May 16, 2006. WVU defeated Akron, 10-6, at Hawley Field. WVU owns the all-time series lead, 14-9, which began in 1982.
WVU closed last season with a 29-22 record. The Mountaineers return 18 players from 2007 to their roster, including 11 lettermen. The squad is led by four seniors and six juniors, and includes 10 true and eight redshirt freshmen. This year’s roster will comprise the youngest team ever under Head Coach Greg Van Zant, who enters his 14th season.
After the Akron series, WVU will play at the annual Baseball at the Beach Tournament in Myrtle Beach, S.C., Feb. 29-March 2. The team will then play host to Duquesne in its home opener on March 4, at Hawley Field at 3 p.m.
