MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University tennis team heads to northeastern Ohio as it faces the University of Akron on Saturday, Feb. 16, at 1 p.m.
The Mountaineers (3-1) are coming off a 4-3 win over Eastern Michigan last weekend, with senior Natalia Prinz leading the way after scoring two victories in singles and doubles competition.
WVU has been dominant in singles play during its two-match winning streak, winning nine of 12 matches. Monica Lyskawa has performed well at No. 2 singles, carrying a 3-1 record heading into Saturday’s contest. Colleen Speaker has also reemerged at No. 4 singles, garnering a 3-1 record as well.
Gabriela Blaskovicova has been steady for WVU at No. 6 singles, winning her last two matches. She defeated Flavia Micati of Eastern Michigan, 6-2, 6-2, and looks to repeat her performance on Saturday.
The Zips (2-2) are coming off a victory over IPFW and are a familiar opponent to WVU after participating in the Martha Thorn Invitational last September.
WVU is 7-1 all-time against Akron in a series that dates back to 1985. The Mountaineers won last season, 7-0, when the match was played at Ridgeview Racquet Club.
