MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - Sophomore guard Liz Repella netted 21 points and 12 rebounds to push the West Virginia University women’s basketball team (7-1) to a 59-41 victory over Duquesne (6-3) this afternoon at the WVU Coliseum. The victory is the team’s sixth-straight.
The Mountaineer defense troubled the Dukes throughout the game, holding Duquesne to 25.9% from the field and 1-20 (5.0%) from the 3-point line. The visitors’ 41 points is the lowest point-total in the series’ 40 games, in which WVU no leads 33-7.
“I thought, effort-wise, we did a great job in getting the big lead,” Coach Mike Carey says. “Effort-wise, especially on defense in the first half, was very good, other than giving up some offensive rebounds. Defensively though, it was very good.”
Repella finished 7-13 from the field and 3-5 from the 3-point line. She also grabbed eight defensive boards and four offensive rebounds for her fourth double-double of the season. The Steubenville, Ohio, native has scored 20 or more points three times this season. Repella completed her line with two blocks and one steal in 36 minutes of play.
Senior Takisha Granberry also netted her fourth double-double of the season with 10 points and 13 rebounds. Granberry was particularly strong on the defensive glass, grabbing 10 boards off of the Dukes’ miscues. The Charlotte, N.C., native also recorded three assists, two steals and one block in 34 minutes.
Additionally, senior Ashley Powell chipped in 10 points on a 5-9 effort from the field, and dished out seven assists, raising her career-total assists to 442 and moving her into fifth place on the WVU all-time assists chart.
The Mountaineers overpowered the Dukes in the paint, netting a 30-22 score advantage and 48-31 rebound advantage.
Morgantown native Keri Pryor led the Dukes with 13 points and nine rebounds.
Up 27-16 to start the second half, WVU’s advantage grew to 19 points, 37-18, at 15:23 with a Granberry layup off a Powell dish.
Pryor brought the Dukes to within 10, 43-33 at 9:22, but an 11-1 run by the Mountaineers, capped by a 3-pointer from freshman Dominique Dixon at 6:10, pushed WVU out to a commanding 20-point lead that the team would not relinquish.
After the Mountaineers jumped out to an early 8-2 lead at 14:09 in the first half, an Amanda Peck jumper at 10:30 tied the score at 10-10. Granberry regained the lead 50 seconds later with a layup at 9:42, and WVU never again relinquished its advantage.
Repella and Powell had free reign in the lanes in the first half, slashing towards the basket for a combined 12 points. Powell’s play was exemplified with her fourth basket, as she took a Granberry pass down the lane and split two defenders to net the hoop and put the Mountaineers ahead 22-14 at 5:16.
The Mountaineers have a six-day break before welcoming Indiana to the WVU Coliseum on Saturday, Dec. 13, for a 2 p.m. contest.
