MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - The West Virginia University men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams picked up an automatic bid for the NCAA Championships from senior Michael Walker to highlight day two of the Georgia Invitational at the Gabrielsen Natatorium.
Walker swam his “A” cut time in the 400 IM, where he finished the race in third place (3:47.36). To begin Saturday evening’s action, Walker was part of a West Virginia 200 medley relay team that finished in fifth place (1:31.27). Joining Walker on that squad were seniors Payton Brooks, Pablo Marmolejo and junior George Farquhar.
Farquhar also put together a good swim that earned him a third-place (55.76) finish in the 100 breast.
Marmolejo received a “B” cut bid to the NCAA Championships in the 100 fly swim where he finished in second place (47.47). A trio of freshmen participated in the B – finals of the 100 fly and Brad Eichenseer finished in fourth place (50.40), while Martin Vanis finished in sixth place, (50.71) and Joseph Bailey finished in eighth place (51.95). The three finished 12th, 14th and 16th overall, respectively.
In the 200 free, another freshman, Taylor Camp, finished first (1:40.13) in the B – finals, which was good enough for ninth place overall.
The men currently find themselves in fourth place (366 points) overall in the meet after two days of action. Georgia is currently in first place (972 points), followed by Denver in second place (479 points).
The women received another individual “B” cut, this time from junior Stephanie Shupe, who finished in sixth place (54.53) in the 100 fly. In the B – finals of the 100 fly, junior Kayla Andrews finished ninth overall and had a first-place (55.48) finish.
