MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia swimming and diving teams recorded five NCAA “B” cut times on Friday evening in the Georgia Invitational at the Gabrielsen Natatorium.
After one day of events the Mountaineers find themselves in fourth-place in both men’s and women’s competition. The men have 170 points, while the women have 113 points. Georgia leads the tournament in both the men and women’s standings.
“This was a really exciting day for us and we were much better this morning than we were last year at that time,” Coach Vic Riggs says. “Overall the team is swimming well and there were some very exciting swims tonight. We are looking forward to tomorrow and Sunday.”
The men got one “B” cut from senior Michael Walker in the 200 IM. Walker finished the event in third-place (1:46.75). Walker now holds the school record and BIG EAST record in the 200 IM.
In the 50 free, freshman Brad Eichenseer finished fifth (21.07) in the A – Finals and senior Payton Brooks finished ninth overall (20.92) and first in the B – Finals.
Junior Justin Galbreath finished twelfth overall (4:34.24) and in fourth-place in the B – Finals for the 500 free.
Two of the Mountaineers relay teams had successful days as well. Junior George Farqhuar, freshman Taylor Camp, Brooks and Eichenseer swam in the 200 free relay and finished in fifth-place (1:24.19). The 400 medley relay featuring Walker, Farquhar, senior Pablo Marmolejo and Brooks had a fourth-place (3:18.41) finish.
The Mountaineer women received their first “B” cut in the 200 free relay led by juniors Shaunna Purtell, Morgan Callaway, Stephanie Shupe and Kayla Andrews. The foursome finished the event in sixth-place (1:33.51)
The women had two “B” cut times in the 500 free from swims by Callaway and senior Lindsey Largo. Both athletes participated in the B – Finals with Callaway finishing in second-place (4:45.80), 10th overall in the heat for a new school-record. Largo finished in seventh-place (4:53.84), 15th overall in the B – Finals.
Andrews received a “B” cut with her eighth-place (23.08) finish in the 50 free. In the B – Finals Shupe and Purtell placed in fifth (23.81), 13th overall and eight (24.15), 16th overall, respectively.
Day two of action in the Georgia Invitational will begin with the preliminaries at 9:30 a.m. and the finals starting at 5 p.m.
